Just read an article on a survey conducted about 401k matching. The survey results showed that cutting back on 401k matching, may contribute to the sour attitudes of some employees. The survey also showed that cutting back on 401k matching contributions makes the 401k less appealing. I highly doubt that a survey was needed to tell people this. Cutting back on 401k matching contributions makes the 401k less appealing?? If they didn't do a survey on this, no one would have realized that suspending the 401k match would make an employee mad.
However what many people miss, is that a 401k match must still be made for many small business 401ks. The Government forces many small business owners to make a 401k contribution equal to 3% of your salary; if the 401k plan is Top Heavy. I suggest that you talk to your HR department and ask them if your 401k plan is Top Heavy. If the 401k plan is Top Heavy, the company must contribute 3% of your salary to your 401k account; despite the fact that they suspended the 401k match. You might not be getting as large of a 401k match as you used to, however you still might be getting something thanks to the Top Heavy Rules.
